NFL Football Teams That Have Won the Super Bowl the Most Times

Here is a list of the NFL football teams that have won the Super Bowl the most number of times. While we all tend to think of the Super Bowl wins as being equal they really are not.

Since 2002, there have been 32 teams competing for the Super Bowl every year. Those Super Bowl wins should be counted equally. Prior to 2002, there were fewer teams competing each season for the Super Bowl.

The fewer teams competing for the Super Bowl the easier it has been for a team to win it. The more teams in the NFL competing for the Super Bowl the harder it has been to win it.

From 1970 to 1975 there were 26 teams competing for the Super Bowl. From 1976 to 1994 there were 28 teams competing for the Super Bowl. From 1995 to 1998 there were 30 teams competing for the Super Bowl. From 1999 to 2001 there were 31 teams and since 2002 there have been 32 teams in the NFL competing for the Super Bowl each season.

All those years are not equal. Teams that won the Super Bowl since 2002 deserve more credit than teams that won before facing fewer opponents. It was easier to win the Super Bowl when the NFL had 26 teams than it is today with 32 teams competing. The more teams the harder it is to stockpile and hold onto talent.

There may not be a huge difference between teams that won the Super Bowl in a 26 league team vs a 32 team league but the difference should be noted and it is below.

NFL Football Teams That Have Won the Super Bowl the Most Times

T-1. New England Patriots - 6

The New England Patriots have won the Super Bowl a record six times - 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Tom Brady has been the QB and Bill Belichick the head coach for all six wins.

The Patriots deserve a ton of credit for the six wins. During the 2001 season, there were 31 teams in the NFL and since 2002 there have been 32 teams playing in the NFL. As noted above the more opponents in a sports league the harder it is to win that league because the larger a league the harder it is to accumulate and hold onto talent.

T-1. Pittsburgh Steelers - 6

The Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the Patriots for most Super Bowl wins at six - 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005 and 2008.

While there were only 26 teams in the NFL when the Steelers won their first two Super Bowls and 28 for wins three and four, the franchise has won two more Super Bowls with the league at 32 teams. Great record.

T-3. Dallas Cowboys - 5

The Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowls - 1971, 1977, 1992, 1993 and 1995. There were 26 NFL teams in the league for the first Super Bowl win and 28 for the 1977, 1992 and 1993 wins and 30 teams for the 1995 win.

When they won their fifth Super Bowl in 1995, the Dallas Cowboys tied the NFL record for most Super Bowl wins and would hold that record for over a decade until the Steelers passed them in 2008. The Cowboys have not been back to the Super Bowl since 1995 which is rightfully a sore point among Cowboys fans (arguably the best fans in the NFL).

T-3. San Francisco 49ers - 5

The San Francisco 49ers are tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the third most Super Bowls wins in NFL history with five - 1981, 1984, 1988, 1989 and 1994. There were 28 teams in the NFL for all of the 49ers Super Bowl wins.

When the 49ers won their 5th Super Bowl in 1994, they set the NFL record for most Super Bowl wins and would hold that record solo for one year until the Cowboys tied them in 1995. They would jointly hold the record until 2008 when the Steelers passed both franchises.

T-5. New York Giants - 4

The New York Giants are tied for the 5th most Super Bowl wins with four - 1986, 1990, 2007 and 2011. This author has been a lifelong New York Giants fan is happy to say he was in the Rose Bowl for the Giants first Super Bowl win in 1986 (actually January of 1987).

There were 28 teams in the NFL when the Giants won their first two Super Bowls and 32 teams for the last two. As a Giants fan it is impossible to overstate just how important a role Bill Belichick played in the first two Super Bowl wins. Bill Parcells has a losing record in the NFL and never won a playoff game without Bill Belichick on his staff.

T-5. Green Bay Packers - 4

The Green Bay Packers are tied with Giants for 5th most Super wins at four - 1966, 1967, 1996 and 2010.

When the Packers won the first two Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967, the NFL and AFL had not yet merged. The Packers had to play against 16 other NFL teams to reach the first two Super Bowls while their AFL opponents in the Super Bowl (Kansas City Chiefs in 1966 and Oakland Raiders in 1967) only had to compete in a nine team league.

When the Packers won in 1996 they did so against a 30 team league and there were 32 teams in the NFL for the 2010 season and win.

T-7. Raiders - 3

The Raiders won the Super Bowl in 1976, 1980 and 1983. There were 28 teams in the NFL for all of the Raiders wins.

T-7. Washington Redskins - 3

The Washington Redskins won the Super Bowl in 1982, 1987 and 1991. There were 28 teams in the NFL for all of the Redskins wins.

T-7. Denver Broncos - 3

The Denver Broncos won the Super Bowl in 1997, 1998 and 2015. There 30 teams in the NFL for the first two wins and 32 for the last win.

T-10. Miami Dolphins - 2

Won in 1972 and 1973 with 26 teams in the NFL.

T-10. Colts - 2

Won in 1970 against 26 teams and in 2006 against a 32 team league.

T-10. Baltimore Ravens - 2

Won in 2000 against a 31 team league and in 2012 vs a 32 team league.

T-13. New York Jets - 1

Won in 1968 when facing just a 10 team AFL league.

T-13. Kansas City Chiefs - 1

Won in 1969 when facing just a 10 team AFL league.

T-13. Chicago Bears - 1

Won in 1985 facing a 28 team league.

T-13. Rams - 1

The Rams won their only Super Bowl in 1999 facing a 31 team league.

T-13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 1

Won in 2002 facing a 32 team league.

T-13. New Orleans Saints - 1

Won in 2009 facing 32 team league.

T-13. Seattle Seahawks - 1

Won in 2013 facing 32 team league.

T-13. Philadelphia Eagles - 1

Won in 2017 facing 32 team league.
