Most Money Ever Won by One Woman in One Event in Sports History

On July 5, 2019, the WTA announced that an undefeated WTA Finals champion in 2019 will earn a record amount of prize money which will be the highest money payout in tennis history. That includes any payouts for both men and women tennis players.

Tennis is the one sport where women players can and often do earn just as much money as their male counterparts. At all four Grand Slam events each season, Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, women players are paid the same amount of prize money as the men players.

What is remarkable about the WTA's announcement for the WTA Finals purse in 2019 is that an undefeated singles champion will earn more money for one event than any man has ever earned in tennis.

As of now, an undefeated ATP Finals singles champion will earn $2.712 million in 2019. That is well below what a undefeated WTA woman singles champion is set to earn this year. It is possible the ATP will respond to the WTA and raise their purse at the Finals to surpass the women but as of now the women will earn far more than the men at their respective tour Finals in 2019.

Undefeated WTA Finals Champion in 2019 Will Earn Largest Prize Money Payout in Tennis and Sports History for a Woman

Just how much money will an undefeated WTA Finals singles champion earn in 2019.

  • $4.7 million

The $4.7 million is a huge amount of prize money and has to be the single largest money payout any woman athlete has ever earned for one event. It is the largest single prize money payout ever paid out to one tennis player man or woman.

To get that huge money a woman will have to win all her tennis matches at the WTA Finals. Not an easy thing to do but any woman who accomplishes the feat is set to earn a record money payout not only for tennis but for all women athletes in the world.
