The British Open dates back to 1860. Harry Vardon holds the record for most wins with six. Tom Watson, James Braid, John Henry Taylor and Peter Thomson are all tied for the the second most wins with five each. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have each won the British Open three times.

Total prize money up for grabs at the 2019 British Open is $10.75 million. That's up 2.4% over the $10.50 million in prize money that was up for grabs here last year. Due to the wide currency fluctuations of the British Pound Sterling the prize money is officially denominated in American dollars in 2019.

The British Open is the fourth and last major in golf played in 2019. At the Masters, Tiger Woods earned $2.07 million for his win, at the PGA Championship Brooks Koepka earned $1.98 million and at the U.S. Open Gary Woodland earned a golf record $2.25 million for his major win.
