New York Yankees Have Paid Jacoby Ellsbury $3.9 Million for Each Home Run He Hit for Them

There have been some horrendous contracts given out to major league baseball players but the absolute worst has to be the $153 million contract the New York Yankees gave to Jacoby Ellsbury. With it looking like Ellsbury will never play another game for the Yankees or in the major leagues it's time to show just how bad the worst contract ever really is.

The Yankees signed Jacoby Ellsbury to a 7-year $153 million guaranteed contract before the 2014 season. Since then, Jacoby Ellsbury has played in just 520 games for the Yankees and hit 39 home runs with 198 rbi's, 273 runs scored and 102 stolen bases.

We can quantify those numbers by dividing the total amount of money the Yankees owe Ellsbury by each stat. The numbers are staggering.

Jacoby Ellsbury Salary from New York Yankees By Stats

  • Per Game - $294,231

  • Per Home Run - $3.9 million

  • Per RBI - $772,727

  • Per Run Scored - $560,439

  • Per Stolen Base - $1.5 million

Can you believe those numbers? The New York Yankees will have paid Jacoby Ellsbury a staggering $3.9 million per home run., $1.5 million per stolen base, $772,727 for each RBI, $560,439 for each run scored and a ridiculous $294,231 for each game played.

Jacboy Ellsbruy is likely the worst contract in baseball history but the New York Yankees have also given out some other horrendous contracts like the one to Carl Pavano.

Carl Pavano - 4 years $38 million (9 wins for Yankees)

  • Per Win - $4.222 million

A lot of people like to call the 10-year $275 million contract the Yankees gave to Alex Rodriguez the worst contract ever but the team got more for their money from A-Rod than Ellsbury. The Yankees won the World Series in 2009 when A-Rod hit 6 home runs, had 18 rbi's and scored 15 runs in just 15 post-season games that championship year. (Ellsbury played in 7 post-season games for the Yankees and never even recorded a single hit)

Overall, the Yankees paid A-Rod $308 million for 351 home runs and 1,509 games played which works out to $878,000 per home run and $204,000 for each game played (that includes the Texas Rangers paying the Yankees $67 million and docking A-Rod for most of his 2014 pay for his steroid suspension).

Has there been a worse contract in major league baseball history than the one the New York Yankees gave to Jacoby Ellsbury?
