Breeders Cup Classic Prize Money $$$$ Payouts in 2018

The 2018 Breeders Cup Classic horse race will take place this year on November 3, 2018, at beautiful Churchill Downs located in Louisville, Kentucky. Here is a list of the prize money and prize money payouts for the 2018 Breeders Cup Classic.

The money below is the amount of money each horse who finishes in the top eight spots in the Breeders Cup Classic will earn. Also listed for each spot is the percentage of the purse each spot gets.

The Breeders Cup Classic offers one of the largest prize money purses in all of horse racing but the purse is far short of being the richest in horse racing. Currently, the richest prize money purse in horse racing is for the Pegasus World Cup which had a purse of $16 million in 2018 with the winner Gun Runner earning $7 million.

The total prize money purse for the 2018 Breeders Cup Classic is $6 million. The winner of the race will earn 55% of the total prize money purse.

Breeders Cup Classic Prize Money $$$$ Payout in 2018

  • Winner - $3.3 million

As noted above the winner of the race gets 55% of the total prize money purse. That works out to a whopping $3.3 million.

Typically in horse racing both the trainer and jockey of the winning horse each get 10% of the prize money won. So the winning trainer and the winning jockey of the 2018 Breeders Cup Classic will each earn $330,000. Not a bad payout if you can win the race.

  • 2nd Place - $1.02 million

The horse that runs second in the Breeders Cup Classic will earn $1.02 million. That is 17% of the total prize money purse. In most horse races the 2nd place finisher gets 20% of the purse but not in the Breeders Cup races.

  • 3rd Place - $540,000

The third place finisher gets 9% of the purse or $540,000. In most horse races the third place finisher gets 10% of the purse but not in the Breeders Cup races.

  • 4th Place - $300,000

The fourth place finisher gets 5% of the purse which is worth $300,000.

  • 5th Place - $200,000

The fifth place finisher gets 3% of the total purse which is worth $200,000 in 2018.

  • 6th Place thru 8th Place - $60,000

The horses who finish from 6th place to 8th place will each get 1% of the purse or $60,000 each.

Horses running below the eighth spot do not win any prize money in the Breeders Cup Classic. These days many race tracks will award prize money to every horse that runs in a race but the Breeders Cup has not gone to that model yet.
