PGA Golf Prize Money Up for Grabs at the 2018 Ryder Cup

The 2018 Ryder Cup golf competition that features the best American players taking on the best European players to win the Ryder Cup is taking place this week from September 28-30, 2018, on the Albatros Course at the Le Golf National located in the southwest Paris suburb of Guyancourt, France. Here is a list of the prize money up for grabs for the PGA golfers to win at the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup competition does not officially offer up prize money for the golfers to win. Instead, the PGA donates $100,000 for each player to a charity of their choice and donates another $100,000 for each player to a college development program of their choice.

So each player gets $200,000 donated in their name for playing in the Ryder Cup. There is no other prize money that players are paid, at least directly.

The Ryder Cup has become a huge event in not just golf but in all of sports that attracts millions of TV viewers from all over the world but especially the United States and Europe. Playing in front of such a huge audience helps any golfer who participates to get their name recognized which can lead to lucrative ad deals for the player.

So even though players are not directly paid prize money for playing in the 2018 Ryder Cup it is still very worthwhile for them to play for name recognition which can lead to lucrative ad and sponsorship deals.

How much money will the Ryder Cup generate in 2018? The event is almost certain to generate some $80 million and could even top the $100 million mark. And that money is not split evenly.

The PGA of America gets 80% of the revenue when the Ryder Cup takes place in America and still gets 40% of the revenue when the event takes place in Europe like this year. The European Ryder Cup will get 60% of the revenue this year (it only got 20% of the revenue in 2016).
