Preakness Super High 5 Bet has Paid an Average of $85,000 Per Year

The super high five bet was first introduced for the Preakness Stakes in 2009, and since then the bet has paid out an average of $85,000 for each winning $2 ticket. To win a super high five bet a bettor has to have the first five finishers in a horse race in exact order.

The super high five is a relatively new bet in horse racing and it is generally not wagered on by bettors in anywhere near the popularity of the superfecta and trifecta bets. In the 2016 Preakness Stakes, a total of $640,946 was bet on the high five, while over $14 million was bet on the trifecta and over $7 million on the superfecta.

Despite the lower total amount of money wagered on the super high five, the bet has paid considerably more than either the superfecta or the trifecta bets have.

In the 2016 Preakness, the trifecta paid just $146.20 for a winning $2 bet, while the superfecta paid $317 for a $1 bet vs the $7,315.60 that the super high five paid for a $2 win ticket.

Here's a list of all the super high five payouts for the Preakness Stakes since the bet introduced in 2009. I've listed the years by the amount the bet paid each year from highest to lowest. In 2015, there were not enough runners entered so the Super Hi Five was not offered. Each amount below is for a $2 wager.

Preakness Stakes super high five payouts

1. 2017 Preakness - $566,446.80

2. 2010 Preakness - $61,014.40

3. 2011 Preakness - $49,742.00

4. 2009 Preakness - $34,003.20

5. 2013 Preakness - $32,187.80

6. 2016 Preakness - $7,315.60

7. 2012 Preakness - $3,667.60

8. 2018 Preakness - $2,740.00

9. 2014 Preakness - $2,438.20

Adding all nine payouts up and diving by nine we come up with an average payout of $84,748.00 for each $2 winning ticket. The super high five bet is super hard to hit but bettors will likely be well rewarded if they can manage to hit it in the 2019 Preakness Stakes.
