European Tour Golf Playing Field for the 2017 China Open, 6 Americans playing

The 2017 China Open golf tournament on the European Tour is taking place this week from April 27-30, 2017, at the Topwin Golf and Country Club located in Beijing, China. Here is a list of the playing field of European Tour players this week at the 2017 China Open focusing on the top players.



The China Open golf tournament dates back to 1995 and it became a European Tour event in 2004. China's young 21 year old rising golf star Li Haotong is the defending champion. The win was Li's first on the European Tour.

The best golfer to win the China Open is Paul Casey from England (in 2003) who has 14 wins combined on the PGA and European Tours. Damien McGrane from Ireland won this event in 2008 and Stephen Dodd from Wales was the 2004 winner. To date, no American has won the China Open.

Top ranked players in the 2017 China Open playing field are Bernd Wiesberger from Austria, Ross Fisher from England, Jeunghun Wang from South Korea, Chris Wood from England, Joost Luiten from the Netherlands, Thongchai Jaidee from Thailand, Brandon Stone from South Africa, Scott Hend from Australia, Fabrizio Zanotti from Paraguay, Thorbjorn Olesen from Denmark, Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand, Jordan Smith from England and Dean Burmester from South Africa.

All those players are ranked in the top 100 in the world. Past winners of the China Open in the playing field not listed above are Li Haotong (2016), Wu Ashun (2015), Alexander Levy (2014), Brett Rumford (2013), Nicolas Colsaerts (2011), Y.E. Yang (2010) and Jeev Milkha Singh (2006). 

Name golfers who have won many European Tour events in the playing field not listed above include Thomas Bjorn (15 European Tour wins), Robert Karlsson (11 wins), David Howell (5 wins), Mikko Ilonen (5 wins), Pablo Laarrazabal (4 wins), S.S.P. Chawrasia (4 wins), Gregory Bourdy (4 wins) and Matteo Manassero (4 wins age 24). 

As mentioned above, no American has ever won the China Open but six American are in the 2017 playing field. David Lipsky from California, Peter Uihlein from Florida, Blake Synder (Washington State), Paul Peterson (Oregon State), Ryan Dillon from Arizona and Mark Baldwin (Notre Dame). Lipsky, Uihlein and Peterson have each won a single European Tour event so it's not impossible an American can win the China Open in 2017.
