Bill Belichick Has Been to the Super Bowl a Record 12 Times

With the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 53 in 2019, Bill Belichick has now been to a record 12 Super Bowls as a coach and head coach. Nobody in NFL history has ever been to anything close to 12 Super Bowls. That includes owners, players, coaches and anybody else directly involved in getting a NFL team to a Super Bowl.

If you think about it there have only been 53 total Super Bowls. And Bill Belichick has been to 12 of them as either a defensive coordinator or a head coach. So over 22% of all the Super Bowls have involved Bill Belichick.

Bill Belichick Has Been to the Super Bowl a Record 12 Times

Belichick went to his first three Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants (1986 and 1990 seasons) and the New England Patriots (1996 season). As head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick has been to nine Super Bowls (2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 seasons).

Bill Belichick started coaching in the NFL as an assistant in 1975. So he's been a coach or head coach since 1975 and he's made the Super Bowl 12 times out of 43 chances or 28% of the time. Basically, the teams Bill Belichick has been involved with have made the Super Bowl almost 30% of the time. That's remarkable.

In 1985, Bill Belichick was named the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. So he's been a defensive coordinator or head coach in the NFL for 33 years and he's made the Super Bowl 12 times over those 33 years or 36.4% of the time. So over 1/3 of the time Belichick was either the defensive coordinator or head coach of a team that team made it to the Super Bowl.

As a head coach, Bill Belichick has made it to nine Super Bowls in 24 years or well over 1/3 of the time. As head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick has made it to nine Super Bowls in 19 years or 47.4% of the time.

All of those numbers are pretty incredible and nobody knows it more than the players who have played for Bill Belichick. When the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins in the NFC Championship game in 1986 to make the first Super Bowl for the franchise the Giants players carried Bill Belichick off the field to recognize how valuable he was to that team.

When the Giants defeated the high-powered Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, the Pro Football Hall of Fame asked for Bill Belichick's defensive game plan to put on display.

Nobody in NFL history has had more of an impact on the Super Bowl than Bill Belichick has.
