Bill Belichick Has Been to the Super Bowl a Record 11 Times

With the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52 in 2018, Bill Belichick has now been to a record 11 Super Bowls as a coach and head coach. Nobody in NFL history has ever been to anything close to 11 Super Bowls. That includes owners, players, coaches and anybody else directly involved in getting a NFL team to a Super Bowl.

If you think about it there have only been 52 total Super Bowls. And Bill Belichick has been to 11 of them as either a defensive coordinator or a head coach. So over 20% of all the Super Bowls have involved Bill Belichick.

Bill Belichick Has Been to the Super Bowl a Record 11 Times

Belichick went to his first three Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants (1986 and 1990 seasons) and the New England Patriots (1996 season). As head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick has been to seven Super Bowls (2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 seasons).

Bill Belichick started coaching in the NFL as an assistant in 1975. So he's been a coach or head coach since 1975 and he's made the Super Bowl 11 times out of 42 chances or 26% of the time. Basically, the teams Bill Belichick has been involved with have made the Super Bowl over 25% of the time. That's remarkable.

In 1985, Bill Belichick was named the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. So he's been a defensive coordinator or head coach in the NFL for 32 years and he's made the Super Bowl 11 times over those 32 years or 34.4% of the time. So over 1/3 of the time Belichick was either the defensive coordinator or head coach of a team that team made it to the Super Bowl.

As a head coach, Bill Belichick has made it to eight Super Bowls in 23 years or more than 1/3 of the time. As head coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick has made it to eight Super Bowls in 18 years or 44.4% of the time.

All of those numbers are pretty incredible and nobody knows it more than the players who have played for Bill Belichick. When the New York Giants beat the Washington Redskins in the NFC Championship game in 1986 to make the first Super Bowl for the franchise the Giants players carried Bill Belichick off the field to recognize how valuable he was to that team.

When the Giants defeated the high-powered Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, the Pro Football Hall of Fame asked for Bill Belichick's defensive game plan to put on display.

Nobody in NFL history has had more of an impact on the Super Bowl than Bill Belichick has.
