States in the United States with the Most Professional Sports Teams

The following is a list of the states in the United States that have the most major professional sports teams. All NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL teams are included. I've also listed how each state on the list is ranked in the United States by population.

States in the United States with the Most Professional Sports Teams

1. California - 1

which is the largest population state in the United States
easily leads the list of states with the most professional sports teams with 1
. Leading the way are five MLB teams, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A's, and San Diego Padres.

There are
four NBA teams in California, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers. There are
 also
NFL teams in California, San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders,
Los Angeles Rams
and San Diego Chargers, and three NHL teams, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, and the Anaheim Duck

2. New York - 10

Though the New York Jets and New York Giants both play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, I'm including them as New York teams based upon their names. I'm leaving out the New Jersey Devils for the same reason.

That means there are 10 professional sports teams in New York State. In addition to the Jets and Giants, the Buffalo Bills play in the NFL. There are three NHL teams in New York, the Buffalo Sabres, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders.

There are also two MLB teams in New York, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, and two NBA teams, the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks. New York State ranks
in the United States by population.

3. Florida - 9

For now, there are nine professional sports teams playing in Florida. I say for now because many of the pro teams in Florida struggle with attendance, and many of the Florida teams are often rumored to be moving to greener pastures.

There are three NFL teams in Florida, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Miami Dolphins. There are also two NBA teams (Orlando Magic and Miami Heat), two NHL teams (Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning), and two MLB teams (Tampa Bay Rays and Florida Marlins). Florida has the
 largest population in the country.

4. Texas - 8

The Lone Star State of Texas has eight major professional sports teams. That includes three NBA teams (Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Dallas Mavericks), as well as two MLB teams (Texas Rangers and Houston Astros), and two NFL teams (Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans).

There is also one NHL team in Texas, the Dallas Stars. Texas has the second largest population in the United States, so one would think the state could support
at least
another pro sports team or two
 or more

5. Pennsylvania - 7

The Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steeleers in the NFL, the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates in MLB, the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA all play in the state of Pennsylvania. That makes seven major pro sports teams
 in Pennsylvania
which ranks fifth in the United States for the state with the sixth largest population.

6. Ohio - 6

The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns of the NFL, the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians in MLB, the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA, and the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL all play in the state of Ohio. The Buckeye State has the seventh largest population in the United States.

7. Illinois - 5

The Cubs and White Sox in MLB, the Bears in the NFL, the Black Hawks in the NHL, and the Bulls in the NBA all play in the city of Chicago in Illinois. The state of Illinois has the fifth largest population in the country.
