Here is a list of the ten largest population cities by metro areas in the United States that do not have a professional sports team. A professional sports team means a team from one of the big four sports leagues in the United States - the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.
Interestingly, four of the ten largest population cities in the United States without a major sports team are state capital cities. Without a doubt some of these cities could support a major sports team.

1. Riverside (California) - 4.5 million
The Riverside, California metro area, which includes San Bernardino and Ontario as well as Riverside, is the largest metro area in the United States without a professional sports team from the NFL, MLB, N|BA and NHL. The Riverside metro area has a population of 4.5 million which ranks 13th in the country.
2. Las Vegas - 2.1 million
The Las Vegas metro area has a population of 2.1 million and no major sports team. That will all change next year when the Vegas Golden Knights start playing in the NHL as an expansion team. The Oakland Raiders of the NFL have been rumored to be moving to Las Vegas but recent reports have the Oakland area coming up with a new stadium plan to keep the Raiders.
3. Austin, Texas - 2 million
The Austin, Texas metro area has a population over 2 million and no major sports team. Austin is the capital city of Texas.
4. Virginia Beach - 1.7 million
The Virginia Beach metro area includes Norfolk and Newport News and some 1.7 million people live here without a major sports team.
5. Providence, Rhode Island -1.6 million
6. Louisville, Kentucky - 1.28 million
The Louisville area does have the Kentucky Derby but no major sports team.
7. Richmond, Virginia - 1.27 million
8. Hartford, Connecticut - 1.21 million
Hartford used to have the Whalers but the NHL team moved to North Carolina in 1997 leaving this Connecticut capital city without a major sports team.
9. Birmingham, Alabama - 1.15 million
10. Rochester, New York - 1.08 million
