Most Hits in a Major League Baseball Game by a Player

On Monday, August 8, 2016, San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford got seven hits in a game vs the Miami Marlins becoming the first player in 41 years to accomplish the feat. Here is a list of all the major league baseball players who have gotten the most hits in a major league game.

1. Johnny Burnett - 9
The all-time record for most hits in a major league baseball game by a player is nine by Johnny Burnett. Burnett set the record for most hits in a baseball game on July 10, 1932, while playing for the Cleveland Indians vs the Philadelphia A's.
The game went into extra innings, and ended up lasting for 18 innings. Johnny Burnett got nine hits in the game in 11 at-bats. Two of his hits were doubles, and the rest were singles.
Jimmie Foxx, playing for the Philadelphia A's, got six hits in the game, including three home runs. That is one hit short of making this list of players with the most hits in one baseball game. The A's defeated the Indians in the game by a score on 18-17.
T-2. Cesar Gutierrez - 7
Cesar Guiterrez of the Detroit Tigers holds the record for most hits in a major league baseball game that ended without going into extra-innings with seven. Guiterrez set the record on June 21, 1970, in a game vs the Cleveland Indians.
In the game, Cesar Gutierrez got seven hits in seven at-bats. He became the first player since 1900 to get seven hits in seven at-bats in a major league baseball game. Gutierrez got six singles and one double in the game.
Despite the record seven hit game, Cesar Gutierrez was never much of a major league hitter. He finished his career with just 128 total hits, and a batting average of .235.
T-2. Rennie Stennett - 7
Rennie Stennett of the Pittsburgh Pirates is tied for the record for most hits in a major league baseball game that did not go into extra innings with seven hits. Stennett set the record on September 16, 1975, vs the Chicago Cubs.
The Pirates destroyed the Cubs in the game by a score of 22-0. Rennie Stennett batted lead-off and got seven hits in seven at-bats, becoming only the second player in baseball history since 1900 to get seven hits in seven at-bats in a game.
In the game, Rennie Stennett had two doubles, a triple and four singles. He was a just a home run away from hitting for the cycle, but Stennett was never much of a home run hitter.
T-2. Wilbert Robinson - 7
Catcher Wilbert Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles set the record for most hits in a nine-inning game when he got seven hits on June 10, 1892, in a game vs the St. Louis Browns. Six of the hits were singles, and one was double.
Robinson had seven at-bats in the game, so he was also the first player in baseball history to get seven hits in seven at-bats in a game.
After his 17 year playing playing career was over, Wilbert Robinson managed in the major leagues for 18 years, all with the Brooklyn Robins (he was also a player manager for one season with the Orioles in 1902). Wilbert Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 1945.
