Golf Prize Money Up for Grabs at the 2016 PGA Championship

The 2016 PGA Championship golf major tournament is taking place this week from July 28-31, 2016, on the Lower Course at the Baltusrol Golf Club located in Springfield, New Jersey. Here is a list of the prize money up for grabs for the golfers to win at the 2016 PGA Championship.

The PGA Championship dates back to 1916 and it is the fourth and last major being played in 2016. The PGA Championship was a match-play event until 1958 when it switched to a stroke play event. Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus are tied for most PGA Championships with five each. Tiger Woods is alone in third place with four PGA Championships.

Total prize money up for grabs at the 2016 PGA Championship is $10.5 million. That is up 5% over the $10 million that was up for grabs in this golf major in 2016. The $10.5 million is also tied with the Players Championship for the richest purse in golf in 2016.

Winner - $1.89 million

The winner of the 2016 PGA Championship will earn a very cool $1.89 million. That is up 5% over the $1.8 million Jason Day earned when he won this major last year. It's also the same amount of prize money that Jason Day earned when he won the Players Championship back in May.

Second place - $1.134 million

Second place is worth a cool $1.134 million at the 2016 PGA Championship. That is up 5% over the $1.08 million Jordan Spieth earned when he finished in 2nd place in this major last year. It's also the same amount of prize money Kevin Chappell earned with his 2nd place finish this year at the Players Championship.

Third place - $714,000

Third place at the 2016 PGA Championship is worth $714,000. That is up 5% over the $680,000 that Branden Grace earned with his 3rd place finish in this golf major last year.

Fourth place - $504,000

Fourth place is worth $504,000 at the 2016 PGA Championship. That is up 5% over the $480,000 that Justin Rose earned when he finished alone in 4th place at this golf major last year.

Fifth place - $420,000

Fifth place at the 2016 PGA Championship is worth $420,000. Brooks Koepka and Anirban Lahiri split $735,000 with each player earning $367,500 when they tied for 5th place in this golf major last year.

Sixth place - $378,000
